Rolling Stock Directory

These are tables of Diesel Electric Multiple Units (DEMU), Diesel Hydraulic Multiple Units (DHMU), Diesel Locomotives (including shunters), Electric Locomotives, Electro-Diesel Locomotives, Electric Multiple Units (EMU) and Trailer Units considered to be native (and in most cases exclusive) to the Southern System. Note that whilst some current "Southern" Train Operating Companies have continued to devise SR/BR(S) type codes for new rolling stock in addition to BR/Rolling Stock Library TOPS codes some types have only ever been known officially by their TOPS designations. Note that in compiling this table enthusiast-only designations have not been used, and not all units with a TOPS code allocated will have displayed them.

Whilst every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of these details the Southern Electric Group and its contributors cannot be held responsible for errors and omissions. If you spot anything amiss you are invited to contact the SEG Webmaster so that we can make this information as accurate as possible.

This feature is a co-production with the Southern E-Group and these lists were painstakingly compiled and updated by John Lewis and Colin Duff.

n/a n/a 456 BR late design sliding door suburban units. Built 1990-1 for Network SouthEast to augment 4 car 455s but also used singly or in multiple with each other. Refurbishment of the class was completed during July 2007. During 2008 units were modified by Southern at Selhurst to have the lavatory removed, then reconfiguring the seating to create an area for wheelchairs adjacent to the doors. As a result of introduction of Class 377/6/7 stock withdrawals by Southern commenced in October 2013 and continued until the end of the year. In 2014 these units were leased to South West Trains, driver training commencing in January and re-introduction to service prior to refurbishment was in March on Guildford - Ascot Services. Progress on refurbishment was slow and the first refurbished unit re-entered service in November 2014. Generally run with class 455 units to make 10 car trains.  Upon take over by South Western Railway it was decided to replace all suburban unit types with a uniform fleet of new Bombardier "Adventra" series class 701 units.  Class 456 units were due for withdrawal once the class 701 fleet is introduced in sufficient quantity. No re-deployment for these units has yet been found and they may be scrapped. With delays to the introduction of class 701 units, in 2021 class 456 units were withdrawn when they became due for overhaul or they became faulty.  In theory the reduced loadings during the Covid Pandemic permitted withdrawal, but in practice it led to short formations and at times over-crowding.

Introduced 1993-4 by for Network SouthEast SE services. Subsequently owned by Angel Trains. From 2010 they have undergone a programme of C4/C6 overhauls at Wabtec Doncaster. These units have not been fitted with wheelchair accessible lavatories so are now only permitted to work in multiple with class 465 units. See also classes 465/0, 465/1. 465/2 and 465/9.
n/a n/a 482 2 car Waterloo & City line units as a follow-on order to the LUL 1993 Central Line stock. Introduced by Network SouthEast but the W&C line & its stock was sold to London Underground prior to the privatisation of British Rail. Refurbished in 2006.  Due to be replaced by new stock, originally in 2024 at the earliest but the schedule has slipped by a few years.

Similar to "new" Class 230 diesel-electric or diesel-battery multiple units.
3-car units
3Cep n/a 411/9 4Cep with TSO removed. See also 4Cep. In 2000 Connex SE created some 3 Cep units. The enhanced performance enabled them to operate alongside Class 365 units on an accelerated service on the Chatham main line and in later years elsewhere on the South Eastern. The 3 Ceps were also used to form 11-car peak trains to Tunbridge Wells, where the platforms are too short for 12-car trains and tunnels at both ends made platform extension impracticable. (Power supply constraints prevented trains longer than 8 cars operating between Tunbridge Wells and Hastings.) The released TSOs allowed South West Trains to convert their remaining 4Bigs to 4Cigs - see class 421/5. In 2003 South West Trains reformed 4Bep 2326 to 3 car as 1199 "Lucy" to work the Lymington Branch.  1199 withdrawn May 2004 and replaced in June 2004 by 2314 reformed as 1198 "Linda". 1198 withdrawn early 2005. Towards the end of slam door stock operating further SE 4Ceps were reduced to 3 cars to be able to keep to accelerated class 375 schedules.
3Cig n/a 421/4 4Cig with TSO removed. See also 3Cop, 4Big, 4Cig  & 4Cop.  In November 2004 South West Trains reformed Cig 1394 as 1499 to work the Lymington Branch to replace the 3Cep operation.  In February 2005 SWT announced the reformation and refurbishment of two further units (planned to be 1883 & 1888) to 1497 & 1498 to work the branch as a "heritage" operation.

n/a 450/5 Siemens Desiro series 20m units. See also 4Des, 450/0. Conversion of 28 class 450/0 units to standard class only high capacity configuration, unit numbers translating directly from 4500nn to 4505nn. Introduced 21st January 2008. First class seating was restored in mid 2013 but these units have not completely been restored to their original internal configuration and remained numbered in the 450/5 series but without the "HC" designation.  Units were observed re-numbered back to the 450/0 series in late 2019.
n/a n/a 455/7 BR late design sliding door suburban units. Introduced 1984-5, second series 455 with revised cab roof design and incorporating a former class 508 trailer. Class were refurbished with completely new interiors. Subsequently re-engineered with ac traction equipment. Upon take over of the South Western franchise by South Western Railway it was decided to replace all suburban unit types with a uniform fleet of new Bombardier "Adventra" series class 701 units. Class 455 units were due for withdrawal once the class 701 fleet is introduced in sufficient quantity. No re-deployment for these units has yet been found and they may be scrapped. With delays to the introduction of class 701 units, in 2021 class 455 units were withdrawn when they became due for overhaul or they became faulty. In theory the reduced loadings during the Covid Pandemic permitted withdrawal, but in practice it led to short formations and at times over-crowding.
n/a n/a 455/8 BR late design sliding door suburban units. Introduced 1982-84, first series 455. South Central/Southern have refurbished units from this series with new features including removal of the end gangways. SWR Class 455 units are due for withdrawal once the class 701 fleet is introduced in sufficient quantity. No re-deployment for these units has yet been found and they may be scrapped. With delays to the introduction of class 701 units, in 2021 SWR class 455 units were withdrawn when they became due for overhaul or they became faulty. In theory the reduced loadings during the Covid Pandemic permitted withdrawal, but in practice it led to short formations and at times over-crowding.
n/a n/a 455/9 BR late design sliding door suburban units. Introduced 1985, third series 455. Last 5 units, 5916-20, fitted with Thyristor control, subsequently removed. 5Wes n/a 442 BR Mk3 design express units. Class refurbished twice. First by South West Trains largely to create a larger standard class compartment in the MBLS at the expense of the under-used luggage storage area, thus becoming a MBS. Second by Southern to convert the DTC to DTS (thus finally ending the use of compartment stock on the national rail network) and building a first class saloon in the area of the MBS formerly occupied by the by now un-used buffet counter, and the much loved "snug" area. Thus the MBS became a MBC. 18 units have further been rebuilt for South Western Railway reinstating a DTC and the MBC reverting to a MBS. Introduced 1988 by Network SouthEast for Waterloo-Weymouth and later also used on Portsmouth services. Motor coach uses recycled motors and traction equipment from 4Rep stock. The class was concentrated on Waterloo-Weymouth line services once Class 444s were fully introduced. The entire class was controversially withdrawn by South West Trains on 3rd February 2007 and units went into store at Eastleigh. Seventeen were subsequently leased by Southern/Gatwick Express for Victoria-Gatwick-Brighton peak services and certain Gatwick Express workings. The remaining seven were taken on lease by Southern to run, from the December 2010 timetable change, Victoria - Brighton express workings and all Gatwick Express services. Upon introduction of class 387/2 units on Gatwick Express services, after a period in store 18 units were taken on by South Western Railway and refurbished, including some getting new ac traction and control gear. The remaining six units were scrapped. However, in a remarkable repeat of history, despite the expensive refurbishment and some having gained ac equipment it was decided to withdraw these units in favour, again, of class 458 units (which were due to be replaced by class 701s). Scrapping of class 442 vehicles commenced in 2021 but it is thought there may be some re-use for a small number of vehicles.

36 five car units, the early members originally due on trial from May 2013 30 formed by augmentation of 4 car 458 units to 5 cars using vehicles from disbanded former 8 car class 460 units, 6 formed by reformation, including radical rebuilding of 4 driving motor luggage first cars, of former 8 car class 460 units. However, due to the complexity of the job the rebuilding took much longer than expected. The first 5 car Junipers, 458531 and 458534, converted entirely from former Class 460 vehicles, finally entered service in March 2014. 458501 was the first Class 458/0 augmented unit to be delivered however 458502 was the first to enter service, in September 2014. Upon take over of the South Western franchise by South Western Railway it was decided to replace all suburban unit types with a uniform fleet of new Bombardier "Adventra" series class 701 units. SWR Class 458 units were due for withdrawal once the class 701 fleet is introduced in sufficient quantity. However, in a remarkable repeat of history it was decided instead to withdraw class 442s (again). 28 class 458/5 units are to be restored to 4 car configuration (losing their former class 460 car), refurbished again and re-geared to 100mph principally for Waterloo-Portsmouth services. A small number of units have been withdrawn unserviceable or for trial rebuilding by Alstom at Widnes.

n/a n/a 701/5 Bombardier "Adventra" series 30 five car suburban units for South Western Railway due into service in 2021. These replace SWR classes 455/7, 455/8, 455/9 456, (originally class 458/5) and 707, the entire suburban fleet. However, delivery and introduction to service of this class has been delayed due to issues with software and design of the cabs. In order to fit in another row of seats the cabs of SWR 701s are smaller than other Adventra classes, which has caused problems.
n/a n/a 707 Siemens "Desiro City" 20m units, dual voltage capable but only currently equipped for picking dc. These use the new six digit car numbering scheme Announced on 3rd September 2014 was an order of 30 five car trains for South West Trains for Waterloo-Windsor and other suburban services, permitting a cascade of Class 455 and 450 units and thus increasing capacity for ten car working. Built 2015-16 as is typical these days there was a delayed introduction to service. Similar to Class 700 but without lavatories they also do not have corridor connections between units. Upon take over of the South Western franchise by South Western Railway it was decided to replace all suburban unit types with a uniform fleet of new Bombardier "Adventra" series class 701 units. 18 class 707 units were transferred to Southeastern during 2021 prior to introduction of SWR's class 701 units. Although the remaining 12 are due to be transferred in early 2022 it is believed SWR are negotiating to keep them for longer due to a shortage of suburban rolling stock. They are running on Southeastern suburban services in a blue livery and they have been branded "City Beam".

Formed 1968 to make up for shortage of express stock on the Waterloo - Bournemouth service. Disbanded 1974. 7741 and 7742, but not 7739, reformed.
n/a n/a 460 GEC-Alstom "Juniper" series units. Introduced September 2000 for the Gatwick Express service. As a consequence of the Brighton Main Line RUS and integration of the Gatwick Express franchise into the Southern franchise the class will go off lease from Southern and be redeployed to another TOC. The first units went off lease on 12th December 2010, the entire fleet was expected to be off lease by the end of April 2011, although 460001 and 460002 remained in intermittent and at times regular service until August 2012. These units are now withdrawn and their vehicles being used, with rebuilding of four of the driving motor luggage van firsts, to form 6 "new" class 458/5 5 car units and augment the existing 30 4 car 458 units to 5 car 458/8 units. Four driving motor luggage van firsts were "spare", potentially to provide spare parts. With the decision by SWR to retain class 458 units instead of class 442 and rebuild them back to express 4 car units, mostly for Portsmouth line services, former class 460 vehicles will not be retained and thus face scrapping.
