Class 458/5 Stately Progress

Comparison of window lines on 458502

photograph by "GB"

Conversion and introduction to service of Class 458/5 units continues at a stately pace. However, now that the first two 458/50 units (i.e. those which are augmented 458s) are in service the different window lines of original Class 458 vehicles and converted Class 460 vehicles is readily apparent. Former Class 460 cars retain their ribbon glazed windows whereas Class 458 cars were built with discrete frames and gaskets. Note the difference, above, on 458502 at Waterloo on 22nd October 2014. Lovers of visual symmetry please note, the former Class 460 car is not inserted into the middle of the unit, but adjacent to one of the driving cars.

Augmented former Class 458s have so far not received their originally intended vehicles. The reality is:
8501 has 74431 added
8502 has 74421 added
8503 has 74441 added
8504 has 74451 added
