Southern Farewell to Class 456

Southern are transferring their 24 Class 456 2 car units to South West Trains, which after refurbishment to the same standard as their Class 455 units, will work with two Class 455 units to permit 10 car suburban workings (in addition to Class 458/5 outer suburban workings). Withdrawals began ahead of the December 8th timetable change once sufficient Class 377/6 units entered service. On the night of 18th October 2013 6005, 6008, 6014, 6022, 6023 and 6024 were withdrawn from operational service at Selhurst, travelling to Stewarts Lane, for "warm" store as two trains 6005 + 6023 + 6024 and 6008 + 6014 + 6022. Their last workings for Southern, all on October 18th, were
6005 18:36 London Bridge to Sutton
6008 18:50 London Bridge to Epsom
6014 18:50 London Bridge to Epsom
6022 17:38 Victoria to Tattenham
6023 09:30 London Bridge to Tulse Hill
6024 09:00 London Bridge to Tulse Hill

Then on 30th October 2013 6004, 6010, 6011 and 6019 were put into "warm" store well away from their normal purlieu at the North End Sidings at Haywards Heath. Their last passenger workings for Southern (all on 25th October) were
6004 and 6010 17:38 Victoria to Tattenham Corner
6011 18:13 Victoria to Selhurst
6019 19:50 London Bridge to West Croydon

On 29th November 6022 and 6023 were transferred to South West Trains at Wimbledon.

The remaining members of the class were not withdrawn with the December 8th timetable change and continue to work, though it is expected this will cease at the end of the year. Twelve were expected to go straight to Wolverton for refurbishment and ten are expected to be delivered to Clapham Yard for South West Trains to add to the two already at Wimbledon. It is currently planned that 456s will re-enter service between March and December 2014.
