First Class 378 Delivered

The first 3 car unit, 378001, was delivered from Bombardier's Derby Works to MoD Shoeburyness, for testing and commissioning, overnight 20th to 21st September 2008.

Our first four pictures of this class were kindly contributed to the SEG by well known railway photographer Brian Morrison and were taken at Bombardier's Derby Works.

378001 on th test track at Derby

The first member of the class on the test track at Derby. Note that unlike London Underground stock these units display warning yellow fronts for operation on Network Rail lines, yet another design of Electrostar cab front - in this case non corridor but with an emergency exit - but otherwise these units are externally similar to 's high density class 376.

You are welcome to view our mini-feature comparing and contrasting the Three Faces of DC Electrostars.

view of almost full width intra-unit corridor connection An unidentified unit under construction in the works - note the almost full width intra-unit gangways and the external similarity to class 376 with power operated sliding doors (for quicker opening and closing compared to plug doors) but unlike the class 376 these units have air-conditioning and the windows can be unlocked in an emergency. The class 378 has external CCTV like 's class 377.
view of the driver's cab The driver's cab - similar to that on a class 376.
interior of class 378

The interior seating arrangement is similar to London Underground surface stock, so don't expect to get a seat during busy periods! Both driving motors seat 36, the trailer of a three car set only has 34 seats.
