Haywards Heath 175th Railway Anniversay

Haywards Heath 175 banner

Sunday 18th September 2016 saw a number of events to mark the 175th anniversary of the arrival of the railway in the town. It was a considerable success with large crowds being drawn. The Southern Electric Group contributed its display stand with the display especially altered to show pictures of the railway in the vicinity over time.

1001 arriving in platform 1 with large crowds awaiting its next sortie

(above) One of the highlights was the participation of Hastings Diesels' "Ardingly Arrow" railtour. This ran from Hastings to Haywards Heath via Victoria. The unit then ran a shuttle service up and down the remains of the Ardingly Branch for the public - a rare opportunity to travel on this now goods only line. Five round trips were scheduled but demand was so high - note the crowds waiting on the platform - that seven sorties ran. This photograph shows 1001 arriving back in platform 1 from Ardingly.

(below) As previously mentioned the shuttles up the Ardingly branch were extremely popular.
