2416 and 2420 to be re-activated

2416 and 2420 about to pass back through Brockenhurst station on 7th May 2009

Stored 2416 and 2420 were taken for a run out on the main line on 7th May 2009, the first time since being stored exactly 2 years ago, unusually not from Eastleigh to Basingstoke, but to Brockenhurst. The driver and onboard crew changed ends shortly before Lymington Junction and the units are pictured here coming back through Brockenhurst station. It is reported that this pair are due to go to Chart Leacon on 15th May for general overhaul prior to reintroduction to service.

These units were originally not picked by due to requiring external and mechanical overhaul, as well as 2416 having a unique (to the fleet) Liebherr air conditioning system.

Last 442 leaves Eastleigh

2420 just leaving Eastleigh Works for Chart Leacon on 31st July 2009

Last time we reported on the Class 442's, 2416 and 2420 were about to go to Chart Leacon. However, 2420 returned shortly afterwards due to what is thought to be a lack of room at Chart Leacon. Then on 31st July, 2420 returned to Chart Leacon under its own power, making this the last time a 442 will leave Eastleigh.

It is now expected that all 24 units will return to service.

A video of the unit leaving Eastleigh can be seen here on Youtube.

442409 is back!

Pigs may not be able to fly but this one can come back from the dead. On 22nd July 2010, 442409 (with EDL 73141 as ‘insurance’) made 2 test runs between Chart Leacon and Tonbridge and return. Unlike other test runs out of Chart Leacon, the unit was not moved to Stewarts Lane in the same day, however, a move is expected shortly. From Stewarts Lane, the unit will go to Wolverton Works for its interior refurbishment.

UPDATE - Wolverton move details below.

2409 was last used in passenger service over 3 years ago on 12th January 2007. The unit's last outing was on 29th August 2008 when it was dragged up to Chart Leacon by 67006 and used as a donor unit to provide spare parts to all the other units. Since then, parts have been aquired in order for the unit to be brought back into service.
