Gillingham Signal Box on 9th April 2011

Gillingham signal box was built by the South Eastern & Chatham Railway in 1913. It is east of the station, so as to be able to control the level crossing. It can be seen that the original doorway in the east end of the building has been closed off and a new entrance provided at the rear. The large, modern building, with a curved roof, in the background is the new signalling centre that will take control of the lines from Longfield to Sheerness, Ramsgate and Shepherds Well.

Gillingham signal box will be closed during phase 2 of this project.

Margate signal box is west of the station and has a high brick base. Therefore, it may not be noticed at all by passengers. It is contemporary with Gillingham box, but considerably larger, having no fewer than 80 levers.

Margate signal box will be closed as part of the first phase of this project.

Rainham Signal Box on 3rd April 2011

Rainham signal box is a panel box provided by British Railways in connection with the Kent Coast electrification scheme of 1959. It is located at the east end of the down platform and can be seen to be exactly 39 miles from Victoria . There are similar boxes, also to be abolished, at Rochester , Sittingbourne and Faversham. Sittingbourne was provided with a new panel when the Sheerness branch was resignalling in 2005. The others retain their original entry-exit panels. Rainham signal box will be closed during phase 2 of this project.
